Lamellar [May. 15th, 2008|09:09 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
My back hurts, my fingers are sore from pushing cord through holes just big enough, and I've got burns on them from putting out 550 cord with my fingers.

I've discovered that while making rows of plates is tedious and boring, lacing them together purely SUCKS.  At least it goes quickly once you figure out the trick.

On the other hand, I've got the majority of the cuirass put together.  I need to do two short rows for the upper back, and lace them on.  I've got and idea for the shoulder "straps" which works in theory, I just need to put them together and make sure it works with the gorget as well.  I hope to have this ready for fighter practice Saturday afternoon.

Also, my lovely Lady Wife is apparently suffering from some bad Chinese food or something and is feeling under the weather.  She doesn't have internet at the place in Austin this week, but drop some good wishes on her LJ if you all would.

I hate it when she's sick, it's that whole "My Beloved is miserable and there's nothing I can do about it."  It sucks a little less if I'm there in person, because I can channel that 'must do something' urge into making chicken soup or something to take care of her.  Here, I lace armor.

Also, anyone who lectures someone asking about buying something on the SCA LJ group on how much of a more medieval experience it is to make something, is a jackass who needs to go back to World History 101.  Any economy developed more than the hunter-gatherer stage has a division of labor.  Most people--upper class especially--wouldn't have the faintest clue how to make most of the items they use.  And neither would a master woodworker make his own tools, or a blacksmith his own shoes.

You all have no idea how difficult it was to restrain the Sarcastic LJ Comment Of Doom on her. . .

Dude, you should have seen the firestorm that erupted on the East Kingdom list when I said I preferred non-period SCA songs to period songs.

i kind of like non-period SCA songs, too - but there's a good reason for that. a lot of 'modern mideval' SCA music has a melodic line/ support chording structure closer to modern definitions of 'good music'. period music frequently sounds 'odd' to the modern ear. so does non-Western ethnic music.

besides, i'm a sucker for stories, and modern SCA songs are frequently balladic stories. :-)

A-MEN! Tell it! I can sew. I have sewed. I buy T-tunics off the rack at Pennsic, because I don't LIKE to sew. I'd rather devote my time to reading stuff like Bourne, "Art of shooting in Great Ordnance", or Woodall, "The Surgion's Mate".

That's what merchants are for.

Or how about, "Well, our friendly group armorer is in Iraq, and I'm about to go to Iraq, and that kinda leaves her up the proverbial creek, so how about cutting the Lady some slack, you discourteous cur?"

Ah - I thought this was about your boot post. Did someone get sniffy about her shield-blank post? I'll have to wander over there and snark the dimwit.

Sort of. This is my current idea for a response:

Good gentle,

My friendly neighborhood armorer, the one in my household and the one who made my current shield, is deployed to Iraq. He's got slightly different priorities about personal protection than I do at the moment.

My husband, who is another friendly armorer of sorts, is currently at school in Missouri and we'll be kissing and waving as he passes through Texas on his way to a desert vacation on Uncle Sam. By the time they get back, it will be my turn to go to play in the sand again.

Also, while I might be able to knock out a blank, getting it strapped, covered, etc, would, because of my schedule (I work 70 miles from where I live and because of that, am in the process of moving), likely take me longer to finish than I want to wait.

While I am sure that there are many other friendly, helpful armorers in the groups I play with, I simply started looking at a new shield *yesterday,* upon a recommendation by my trainer.

Also as a newbie fighter, I'd like to get started fighting sooner rather than later, and so, I was inquiring about shield blanks.

Even though I am learning to be a fighter, I find my passions for learning how to do things correctly, in my period, lie with sewing, more so than making Byzantine shields.

I feel sure that you did not spin and weave all the fiber necessary to make your first garb, but rather worked up to that level of intensity, and so, I am sure you understand wishing to start slowly and work from there.

I thank you for your comments.

Yeah, but lamellar looks so pretty! I'm going to make a suit of lamellar for my evil character. With chain mail mixed in too.
